第一話で言ったけど、私は「EJU」を取れました。その時の経験をもっと説明します。

As I said in the first entry, I already took the EJU exam, so let’s elaborate more on that.

「EJU」は、毎年二回に行います。私が取ったは二つ目です。試験の登録は7月で終わって、11月に行いました。

The EJU has been divided into 2 sessions annually, and the one I took was the 2^nd session. The registration ended in July, and the actual test happened on the 13^th of November.

登録は本当に簡単でした。読者様がもっと調べたら、JASSOのウェブページへどうぞ。

早送り、試験の日に私が午前6時から用意しました。試験が8時に始まってるのに、家は試験場から少し遠いから朝早いに行ってきました。

Fast forward to the day of the test, I got myself ready starting from 6 A.M. The test began at 8, but because my home is a bit far away from the site I have to go early.

試験監察官の言った通りに、私が7時半くらい試験場に来ました。

I arrived at the site at 7:30, as instructed in the message from the test organizer.

所で、私の友達も「EJU」を取っていたけど試験が開始する時間に遅れて来ました。なんか早くに来るのは必要ありませんね。

By the way, one of my friends also happen to take EJU, but he arrived much later near the start time. I guess it’s unnecessary to arrive earlier.

時計が8時になる時に、試験監察官がルールを説明しました。ルールは音を静かにするとか机の上で用品以外を置けないとかとても普通なルールでした。

As the clock turned 08:00, the organizers started explaining the rules. Pretty much standard test rules, like silencing any sources of sound, not putting anything other than utensils, etc.

そして、「EJU」の日本語試験を話します。その試験の内容をもっと説明し、「JLPT」の内容と比べます。私は一生に「JLPT」を取った事がないんですが、ネットである問題を使えたら比べて出来るかもしれません。

Then there come the contents of EJU’s Japanese language test. We’ll elaborate on it, as well as compare it to JLPT. While I’ve never tried JLPT before in my life, I can try looking for examples on the internet.

「EJU」は三枠に分けました。その種類は作文、読解、聴解と言われます。

The EJU test was divided into three categories: writing, reading, and listening.

作文は「JLPT」にいないから、それは「EJU」と一番違っている部分と思います。作文分に、応募者が500文字以内で解答用紙にある箱に書きます。書かれるテーマは問題用紙にある二つのテーマから一つだけを応募者が選びます。

The writing part, I would say, is the most distinguished part in comparison to the JLPT, since JLPT has no such test. In EJU, examinees were given an answer sheet containing 500 boxes for expressing their opinion of the theme of the question. There were 2 themes to write on, and examinees were instructed to choose between the two.

私が書きましたテーマはまだ記憶に残っていますが、コピーライトは良く分かりませんから教えません。

The content of the question I answered was still fresh in my mind, but I’m not sure of the copyright, so let’s skip that.

次は読解です。

The next part is reading.

其の部分は自明だと思います。応募者が文を読み、その文の文脈によって一番正しい答えを選びます。そう言えると、柾に「TOEFL」の読解でした。「JLPT」の読解も同じだと思います。

That section’s name is pretty much self-explanatory. You read a passage, then answer a question in the context of the passage. This section felt similar to that of TOEFL’s reading section. JLPT’s reading section is also the same.

そう言ったら、読解分は普通だと感じますが、私にはその部分は何かおかしいんです。その気分は応募者の目的に繋ぎます。

The reading section felt normal, but I found it quite strange. This is connected with the test-takers objective and interests.

仮に、蛍の解剖が文で説明する問題が、生物学の特別な用語を沢山使えます。社会科に興味がある私が、その問題は私に関係ないんでしょう？

Take, for example, a passage about the anatomy of fireflies. Inside the text, there are many words (i.e. Kanji) with specific meanings in biology. What would you say about the passage’s relevance to my interest in social studies?

なんだかその問題は関係ないんだと思います。これは私だけの意見から、間違っているかもしれません。

I’d say it’s completely irrelevant. Then again, this is just my opinion so that I might be mistaken.

最後は聴解です。また自明な部分です。「JLPT」の聴解を比べたら違いはありません。

The last section of EJU’s Japanese language test is listening. Again, the section’s name is self-explanatory. JLPT’s listening section, as I heard on the JLPT site’s sample test page, sounds similar.

試験は十時半で終わり、二時半くらいで試験を完成するつもりでした。

The test ended at 10:30, meaning that we have 2 and a half hours to complete it.

日本語試験の後は「Japan and the World」と言う社会科と数学の二つ目の試験がありました。

After that, there were　2 more subsequent tests, “Japan and the World”-which measures examinees’ social studies knowledge-and mathematics.

一応インドネシアの「SBMPTN」と同じような試験です。でも、「JatW」は社会科より豆知識だと感じていました。

Pretty much like Indonesia’s SBMPTN, except that JatW questions feel like more trivia than actual useful logical problems.

所で、沢山の問題が「世界の国際図絵」と言う本を良く参考にするから、読者様が「JatW」を完璧点を取りたいならその本を読んでください。将来の試験内容はしらないんですけど。問題を作る人達が参考を変えて決めたら、私を非難しませんね。

By the way, many parts of the questions (including past tests available on JASSO’s page) use Sekai no Kokusai-zue as a reference. Thus, if you want to ace this test, you better read that book. Don’t blame me if the question makers decided to change the reference, though.

数学は…　まあ、数学の問題が分かりやすいんですけど、私が問題を解ける方はもう覚えません。統計以外は6年前から勉強しませんから、仕方がないんでしょう。

The math test… Well, the questions seemed reasonably easy to understand, but in my problem, I had already forgotten most of the formula. I mean, I only ever learn statistics in the past 6 years, so it was to be expected.

それで、「EJU」が午後三時半で全部終わりました。

And thus, the EJU ended at 15:30.

正直に、その全ての試験を取る意味があるかいないか分かりません。「MEXT」はサイトではっきり日本語能力を特に見ると言いますが、「JASSO」が列挙する他の奨学金が「JatW」と数学が必要だと奨学金があります。

Honestly, I’m not sure if taking all those three tests was worth the hassle. I mean, the MEXT scholarship clearly says they primarily look at the Japanese language test result, but some of the scholarships in the list provided by JASSO seemed to require two or three of them.

とにかく、試験が終わりましたから結果を待ち、どんな入学して出来る大学を見ます。

Anyway, since I already took the test, it is best to wait for the result and see where I can apply.
